Early to Rise...

I got out of bed at 7 this morning. In case you were wondering, it was not the first time I was awake, as Owen has decided he wants to eat at 3am and 530 am. But I got up to start the day at 7. Well, it is 11am and I have yet to take a shower. Seriously, for the last four hours I have not sat down (with the exception to nurse) and have been trying to shower. But between making breakfast, feeding kids, cleaning kids, dressing kids, cleaning up food, cleaning up spills, breaking up fights, etc I have NOT found the shower. For a few months it has been evident that if I am to get anything done for myself it must be before the family rises. The famous word's "if only..." Fit here. IF ONLY I got up at 430 am I could work out before the baby needed to eat, the feed him, get showered, dressed, paint the face, and get breakfast made before the kids get up and M has to go to work. There are a few problems with my IF ONLY tho:
* I am a night owl. I love staying up til midnight or 1AM talking with my hubby uncensored, uninterrupted. I love folding laundry when the kids can't destroy my piles, and eating a snack without sharing every bite with my always-hungry baby birds
* I am up every hour to 2 hours from midnight-7 because only one of my children (amiah) actually sleeps all night every night.
Weighing my pros and cons here, it's obvious that with the exception of ZERO sleep, getting up that early can only work in my favor. I would love to think that I could nap in the afternoon, but PJ has out grown them and Miah and Owen and not in sync schedule wise just yet. So, I am looking for insight. Do YOU rise before the rest of the fam? If so, how early? How did you change your internal clock to make it happen? And how long before it was routine?
Thanks for the insight.

  1. I NEVER EVER GET UP BEFORE MY KIDS...this is because I am so damn tired all the time that I wouldn't dream of actually giving up a single second of sleep. I used to be an early riser-exerciser but those days are LONG GONE. After having my babies so close together I lost so much sleep in a two year period that I am certain i will spend the rest of my life trying to make up for it. Now, I just tolerate my kids during the activities that I must do each day such as exercise or shower. But that doesn't mean that I don't feel a high degree of frustration while trying to do those activities with munchkins nipping at my heels. Somehow I still love them...it's because I am amazing...

  2. My alarm goes off at 5:40 and I roll out of bed by 6. I put my socks and shoes on and walk right out the door and start running. After running home from a 3 mile run it's close to 7, or shortly after. I then take the next 45 minutes to load the dishwasher, pick up the living room and put away all of the odds and ends laying around the rest of the house. The thing is - if I just got up and went down stairs and started cleaning - it wouldn't happen. But when I return home from a good run - I feel awesome! I have this great burst of energy and the desire to get going on the house. These days my rule is that I have to be in bed by 10 - there's no way I'm getting up early if I don't take care of myself. But seriously, you've got to give it a try. Your day will be 10 times better if you get up early and work out first!
